The reach of God’s mission of grace is global. God so loved the whole world, he gave his only son. This global reach of God shows up in the Magi who travel from far away and bring gifts to the Christ child. Jesus begins his ministry on a local scale, calling neighborhood fisherfolk to be his first disciples, but the story of Jesus soon reaches out to the world from those humble beginnings. Disciples travel, the church expands. Now the Christian Church is found in every country.
In August, 2018, First Lutheran will celebrate 150 years as a Spiritual House for All. The reach of God’s mission extends even to Cedar Rapids. In this season of Epiphany we begin this year-long celebration of Jesus ministry through First Lutheran by remembering that First Lutheran is a partner in this global reach of the Gospel. One sign of God’s global mission is that First Lutheran Church has a companion partner congregation in the countryside of Tanzania, Same Cathedral Church of the Pare Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania.
As we explore the first steps Jesus took to start the church by the seas of Galilee, we also explore the global reach of the Gospel and the Global Ministries of the ELCA and partner Lutheran churches.
