October 28-29, 2017

10/27/2017

This Weekend in Worship

It's Reformation Sunday! The day of the year when we recognize Martin Luther starting the Protestant Reformation. Read more to the right!
Affirmation of Baptism
This Sunday our 9th Graders affirm their baptism during the 9 & 11:15 a.m. worship services. We encourage the whole congregation to participate in this faith milestone and in the promises made and fulfilled in this ceremony. Please join us to celebrate this ministry of First Lutheran, as we continue to support our families and the faith formation of all ages.
Preaching: Pastor Steve Knudson
Sermon: "How big is the Gospel? Knowing a Greater Love"
These words celebrate the depth of God’s actions for us. Through Christ’s death for us and the activity of the Spirit praying for us, we are fused to God's love poured out in Jesus Christ. Nothing – not even death itself – is able to separate us from such incredible divine love.
Scriptures:
Romans 8:31-39, John 8:31-36 NRSV
Special Music: 5p: Cherub Choir 9a: Adult Choir

500 years ago this weekend, Martin Luther posted his Ninety-Five Theses on the door of the Wittenberg Castle Church – Oct. 31, 1517

The resulting debate about Christian teaching and practice led to changes that have shaped the course of Western Christianity for almost 500 years. At the heart of these wide-reaching changes was a deep conviction that God’s mercy or grace in Jesus is given freely to all. When Luther and others learned to trust God’s mercy with “a living, daring confidence,” they discovered in that faith the freedom to give themselves generously, lovingly in all of life’s undertakings with everyone they met.
