This Weekend in Worship
Preaching: Pastor Leroy Bradway
Sermon: "Surprising Grace and Disruptive Love"
What happens when we rest? When we do nothing, or rest from our labors, is that all there is? a nothing? a stillness? an emptiness? The parable of the mustard seed points to the dynamism of God's Kingdom. God is at work in the world, often in ways hidden from our measuring, and yet surprising us with strength, growth, and productivity. The lesson from Hebrews shifts our attention to what God does when we rest from our labors and gather for worship. In our resting, we open our lives to the work of God's word. In our resting, we open our conscience to the Word of God that has a power to bring new life. We open our lives to the death and resurrection of Jesus now real in our lives. We are brought down, and we are lifted up. We are brought up short by God's word that judges, and we are brought to new life by God's word or promise. The unexpected seed is God's word. We plant when we stop, rest, and listen to God's Word.
