Home: Born in Florence, Italy (hence the name); lived in London, England
Feast Day:August 13; also May 12 is International Nurses Day (Nightingale’s birthday)
Noted for: Being the “Lady with the Lamp” who organized the nursing of sick and wounded soldiers during the Crimean War, Florence Nightingale's far-sighted ideas and reforms have influenced the very nature of modern healthcare.
Lived: 1876 – 1901
Home: East Orange, New Jersey
Feast Day: August 13
Noted for: She was an American nurse who died as a result of volunteering for medical experiments to study yellow ever. Maas was the daughter of German immigrants, raised as the oldest of 10 children in a devout Lutheran family. She has a hospital named in her honor in Belleville, New Jersey.
