When the Hebrews were making their way from Egypt to the promised land they lived in temporary shelters, and their way was guided by a pillar of fire or light. During the Festival of Booths, people build and live in temporary shelters for seven days. John 7:14 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) 14 About the middle of the festival Jesus went up into the temple and began to teach. John 8:12 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) 12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” ![]() What comes to mind when you think of things happening in dark, closed-off spaces? What role does the darkness play? (Think about movies and literature where the setting is dark—why is the darkness significant? What does it convey to us?) Why is it significant that Jesus tells the people, “I am the Light of the World”? What does light offer them? ![]() Loving God, we come together today, rejoicing and dancing in the light that you shine on us that allows us to see you, know you, and find our way to you through your son Jesus. We know that you are with us in this place. Help us to open our eyes to see you, our ears to hear your Word, and our hearts to know your love. In your name we pray.
