MORE THAN A HASHTAG 1.1

Social Media + Social Justice

Because social media is so accessible, it is an incredible tool for spreading the word about a crisis or injustice quickly—especially for people whose voices are ignored or silenced offline.

Although so much good can be done through social media, there can still be downsides to "social media activism."

In the age of social media, it's easy to send a tweet, post a selfie, or share a video about an inspiring cause or campaign. For many of us though, that's where our justice work ends.

So is writing a great post really all it takes to make a difference in the world? Or is it possible that justice is about something more than a hashtag?

Question of Day: What are the positives you have seen regarding social media being used for social justice movements? What are the negatives you have seen?

Discussion Questions:
  • What's one way you've seen social media used to fight for justice?
  • What's one way you've seen social media contribute to injustice?
