Do you recognize the blessing? It is often spoken at the end of worship. Blessings in ancient times were tangible things. They were a spoken word that stayed with the people and places that were blessed. Blessings are real in ways we cannot fully grasp.
Read the blessing again and let it bless you. What in your life needs a blessing? What looks for the assurance of God’s peace? Ask God to bless you right now. Ask God to bless your home, your place of work or school or wherever you go today.
Write the blessing on a 3x5 card or just memorize it. Now take a walk through your neighborhood or wherever you go and pray this blessing silently on the people you see or the homes you pass.
If you go out “trick-or-treating”—pray this blessing on the homes you stop by. Or pray this blessing on the children who come to your door.
What do you see differently or what do you notice? What do you notice about the impact of this kind of praying on you?
Write your reflections in the comments below.
The Sacred three, my fortress be encircling me,
Come and be round my hearth, my home.
Fend Thou my kin and every sleeping thing within from scathe, from sin.
Thy care our peace, through mid of night to light’s release.
