Prayer Ministry

The prayer ministry is a vital part of the life of First Lutheran Church.  There are many ways to live out your commitment to prayer.  Which one speaks to you?

Healing Prayer
Please join us for our next Healing Prayer Worship Services, April 13-14, 2013  In scripture we are told: "Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective." James 5:13-16
The Healing Prayer Ministry Team provides a place to live out James’ call to prayer in and for our faith community. Four times a year, prayers for healing are offered during weekend worship services. As worshippers come forward for communion, they have an opportunity to be anointed with oil and to have someone pray with them. Whatever your prayer--whether you need prayers for relief from suffering, thanksgiving and praise, healing, or forgiveness you are welcome.  If you like to pray and would like to be part of the Healing Prayer Team, please contact Marcie Watson, Director of Spiritual Transformation at marciew@firstlutherancr.org or (319) 365-1494, extension 280.

Prayer Shawl Ministry
  • “What a precious treasure you have shared with me! I’ve discovered it keeps my heart warm as well as my body.”
  • “It will always make me remember that I am not alone.”
  • “Now I have something very precious…I have the love of a whole church shown through the hands of one woman’s work.”

These are just a few of the responses we hear from those who receive prayer shawls through First Lutheran’s Prayer Shawl Ministry. As we near the 250 mark of prayer shawls given to those who are suffering and those who are celebrating, we find that we need more knitters and crocheters.  If you knit or crochet and would like to become a part of this vibrant ministry, please contact Marcie Watson at (319) 365-1494, or stop by the office and pick up your prayer shawl instructions.
After-Worship Prayer Team
Every Sunday a prayer team is available to pray with you about your concerns.  Members of the After-Worship Prayer Team meet in the front of the nave following the 11:00 a.m. worship service and will pray with you there or in a private setting about confidential concerns or joys in your life.  This can be especially helpful in those situations where words may be hard for you to find.

If you have the gift of intercession and would like to join the Prayer Team to pray for others, please contact Sue Fletcher at skmcfate@email.msn.com or (319) 365-9844.

Prayer Chain

We are a people of prayer.  The Prayer Chain is a vital part of First Lutheran's prayer ministry. This network of people is committed to prayer on behalf of the congregation based on Jesus’ words to "ask and you will receive, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened,"  (Matthew 7:7). The importance of the prayer chain is that it faithfully intercedes on behalf of others in need by lifting up specific requests, concerns and emergency situations.  All prayer requests submitted to the prayer chain are held strictly confidential.

If you have someone or something you would like prayer for or about, please note your request on the prayer concern portion of the yellow registration sheet in the weekend worship bulletin,  email your request to Tammy Horak at TammyH@firstlutherancr.org, or call Tammy at (319) 365-1494.

If you have the gift of intercession and are interested in being part of our Prayer Chain team, please send your email address to Tammy Horak at TammyH@firstlutherancr.org.  Prayer requests are sent out weekly on Mondays and throughout the week, as needed.
