Growth Ministries
Spiritual and Personal growth encompasses many of First Lutheran's groups and events. Because we begin "Centered in Christ", we offer opportunities for all ages to help us know Christ better. From the very beginning of life, by giving faith chests to newly baptized children, we make our best effort to instill the Word in our members. We continue that effort in our children and youth through the kidzone and confirmation programs. Even into adulthood we continue bringing people together with programs like Watershed for young adults. And our Senior Adults remain an active bunch with the Activi-ties and Keenagers events. The following pages will take you through events from young to old, for men and women, and onto a few that just don't fit the mold of any one category.

Our Libraries The shelves of your church libraries are full of a wide variety of thought-provoking nonfiction, page-turning fiction, hundreds of videos, CD's, and audio sets. You are always welcome to browse and check out materials. If you have never been in the youth or adult libraries, you can visit them before or after worship services or anytime during the weekdays (weekdays you may borrow a key from the office). The doors to the libraries are to the right and left of the sanctuary entrance. All items are loaned for two weeks, and by just making the request, they can easily be renewed. You can return items to the libraries on the weekends or to the church office weekdays.

On Wednesdays during the school year, volunteers work to accomplish a wide variety of tasks to keep our libraries running smoothly. Work usually begins in the Youth Library about 4:15 p.m. and continues there and in the Adult Library until 8 p.m. We love our volunteers, so just step in and ask if there is something for you do.
The Library Ministry Team oversees the operation of both libraries and always welcomes new members. Meetings are held as needed and are announced in The Light and in the worship bulletin announcements. You can contact the Library Ministry Team through the church office with any questions or suggestions.

Baptism & Baptism Classes
Being baptized into the faith as a believer in Christ is a prerequisite to becoming a member. In the Lutheran Faith, we believe in one baptism for the forgiveness of sins, whether as an infant or adult. When an infant is baptized the parents attend a baptism class the weekend before. In this class they discuss what baptism means and their responsibilities as parents. Also, they are given an orientation to the Faith Chest their child will be given (read below for more details). For Adult baptism, the person being baptized meets with the Pastors ahead of time. It is recommended that they also participate in an Alpha course. To schedule yourself or your child for a baptism, contact Vicki Hughes, our office receptionist.

Faith Chest Ministry When a child is baptized, the family is presented with a gift from First Lutheran, a Faith Chest. This chest is filled with a quilt and many resources to equip parents with tools and creative opportunities to nurture their faith life in their home. These range from parenting tools to recourses used to introduce children to Christ. The chests are handcrafted by a dedicated group of volunteers at First Lutheran. To volunteer for the creation of these boxes, contact Doug Pauls at 390-3237.

Watershed has been prayerfully started with the passion to see you, a Cedar Rapids young adult, grow deeper in your relationship with Jesus Christ, no matter where you are in that journey. We want to see you develop your relationship with God, with others, yourself, and the world. If you are in your 20's or 30's, and you're seeking to be with people your age to explore your spiritual journey with Jesus Christ, Watershed is for YOU. Watershed is a weekly large-group gathering of young adults, every Thursday @ 7:30 p.m. at Maranatha Bible Church. Here we come together for worship through song, Biblically-based teaching, and fellowship following. For more information, visit our website at www.watershedmovement.com, or contact Pastor Tom Pietz at tomp@firstlutherancr.org or 365-1494 X106

Winter Weather Cancellations
It is our practice to cancel Confirmation and children’s choirs if Cedar Rapids schools are closed or dismiss early due to weather. All other groups, events or services, will meet as scheduled. Use your best judgment. If you don't feel safe going out in inclement weather, stay home. We understand, and so does God. If there are additional cancellations, we will also post them at the top of our website, or you can call the church office to be updated.
