Soul Food Ministry
Family is a special blessing from God and Soul Food Ministry wants to nourish the families of First Lutheran Church. Soul Food Ministry is a caring ministry that prepares and delivers meals to new Mom's and their families. When a new baby enters a family it is a busy and hectic time and we show God's love and care by trying to help ease the transition time. We get together at the church twice a month (1st Thursday morning and 3rd Tuesday evening) to cook and package meals. Which are then frozen until needed. Each new Mom receives a basket with two frozen meals to help out with dinnertime.
As the Holy Spirit grows this ministry we hope to reach out to others who might need a hand getting a meal on the table due to illness or hospitalization. Come join us. Help us pull our congregation closer as a family of God by welcoming and helping the individual families of First Lutheran Church. For more information contact Karen Knox at 294-8938.

Solace Servers The Solace Servers are a group of dedicated volunteers whose purpose is to provide a comfort and support following a funeral service by serving lunch to a grieving family and their friends. Each time the Solace Servers are needed, they are contacted from a list of willing participants on a rotating basis. If you are unable to serve at the luncheons, another way you can participate is by donating a salad or cake for the luncheon. If this caring ministry appeals to your heart, please contact either of the co-coordinators: Joan Rust at 396-3867, or Sue Olmstead at 366-4385.

| Ministry of Presence |
| The Ministry of Presence is about relationships. There are lots of ways you can serve and give to others, but the most important way you can serve people, especially with our care-center and home-based members, is to be present with them. Not just "doing time," but really focusing on them and being there for them in any way you can. It's not about you; it's about how God can and will use you. The following sections highlight some of the various ways through the Ministry of Presence that you can be a "light unto the world." |

First Lutheran is committed to extending the hand of Christian fellowship to those who are unable to attend worship and Bible Study. We are currently doing four worship services each month at various locations. These services reach 100 people! If you would like to be involved in these services, please talk with Pastor Kay Slocum.

Tender Transfers The Tender Transfers Ministry was created to help people in our congregation and community with relocating. These are often elderly people, or those who don't know many people in the area. Primarily, we help with the "grunt work," packing, unpacking, and moving from one residence to another. If you'd like to have your name added to the on-call list, please contact members Paul & LeAnn Burdick at 393-7247.

Deacons Serve Our Congregational Family
Deacons are trained and commissioned to serve the sacrament of Holy Communion to First Lutheran members who are not able to come to worship with our congregational family, to carry the love and forgiveness of Jesus to them, pray with them, and be the connection that binds our hearts in Christian love.
Deacons meet regularly with one another for fellowship and renewal, Bible Study, Small Groups and Prayer. If you are interested in becoming a Deacon, please contact Ginny Haug, Deacon Coordinator, at 363-7208.
Friendly Visitors – Thirty FLC members newly volunteered in 2006 for this ministry. Fifteen have been trained and are active in visiting home-based and care-center residents. Contact Pastor Kay Slocum for more information.
Hospital Callers – In addition to hospital visits each week by Pastor Dan, Pastor Tom and Pastor Kay, we have had 11 different lay-member callers as well as the Parish Nurses visiting . We logged 902 hospital visits in 2006.
Parish Nurses – have begun taking an active role now in hospital visits as well as home visits when needed, and taking blood pressures once a month for the congregation and at Keenagers Lunch and at SEMP. Our Parish Nurse team consists of co-coordinators Judy Barnes and Sharla McCarron, and eight other individuals. Our thanks to Claudia Brumm for organizing and training our Volunteer Parish Nurses in 2006 for this new ministry and for designing a manual for the ongoing active participation of parish nurses at First Lutheran Church.

Winter Weather Cancellations
It is our practice to cancel Confirmation and children’s choirs if Cedar Rapids schools are closed or dismiss early due to weather. All other groups, events or services, will meet as scheduled. Use your best judgment. If you don't feel safe going out in inclement weather, stay home. We understand, and so does God. If there are additional cancellations, we will also post them at the top of our website, or you can call the church office to be updated.
